Miriam-Webster has elected the word w00t as their word of 2007.

Miriam-Webster defines the word as:

1. w00t (interjection)
expressing joy (it could be
after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word "yay"

For those who aren't familiar with the term "w00t", it is a word commonly used by l33t enthusiasts within the gaming community. It is generally spelt with a lower case 'w' followed by 2 zeros and proceeded with a lower case 't'. It is an acronym for "we owned the other team". To go further into detail, the term "owned" is often spelt with a "P" in replacing of the letter "o":

"pwned"


While the term "w00t" has yet to be accepted as an addition to the lexicon come 2007, but it is being promoted on the Miriam-Webster website with the hopes of the suggestion gaining momentum.

For those of you who are curious, the Miriam-Webster word of 2006 was "Thruthiness" as popularized by television personality Stephen Colbert.

Very nice! Now, on the subject of w00t, it can also be spelt with a 7at the end, because according to l337 enthusiasts, 7's now look like t's.

Also, pwned.

Unless I'm mistaken (haven't done any research, and don't intend to) the reason for this blaspheme, is because a lot of gamers are too BUSY to move their finger one key to the left to hit the 'o' on their keyboard. Hence 'pwn'.

With their dramatically bad grammar (u gona dye nub), and lack of personal hygene, it is no wonder our society is going down the poop hole.

A survey conducted in 2003 by the Canadian Teachers’ Federation says watching TV is a daily pastime for 75 percent of Canadian children, both boys and girls from Grade 3 to Grade 10.( ... ) Thus, the average child in Canada spends on average 42 hours a week in front of the television or computer.( ... ) That is a huge demographic.
